Eco-Pigment Dyes

The Renaissance of contemporary textile dying - cellulose fiber-reactive eco-pigments.

Low-Impact

Dyeing is an area where take extreme sustainable measures and are strongly committed to using only OEKO-TEX100 certified cellulose fiber-reactive eco-pigments, provided by our trusted UK supplier.
These pigments are fine powders, that have the ability to attach to the fibers using a covalent (electron-sharing) bond resulting a 'permanent stain' - colour. These dyes are here to work with us, not against us.

Positively impacting you:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Skin friendly
  • Toxin, heavy metal and mordant-free

Positively impacting them:

  • vegan
  • less water used during production
  • reduced carbon footprint (cold wash process uses less electricity)

Process

We dye every piece in-house at our Nottingham-based studio in Morley Mills. This way, we maintain full control over the quantity and quality of the final color. Our dedicated machines use a cold wash, low-water cycle for the dyeing process—similar to laundering, but with dye stuff. Each wash is finished with a softener rinse (we use Ecover UK), then hang dried and ready for cutting.

As you can see, this process is a friendly approach to sustainable bulk dyeing.

From Plants to Pigments

As a conscious choice, we switched from plants to eco-pigments to create better dyeing practices and lower our environmental impact. While plant-dyeing sounds more 'organic', this method was actually far less sustainable. Dyeing with plants required overnight soaking to open up plant fibers, mordants to bond the plant pigments to the fabric, and near-boiling water to achieve darker shades. This entire procedure was not conducive to reducing energy usage.

This is how we achieve our currently featured colours:

  • Pearl: no dye used, fabric is bleach-free, raw white shade
  • Peach: eco-pigments
  • Noir: eco-pigment & household vinegar
